Pet food producer to introduce advanced odour control technology at new Castle Cary facility

Further investment in advanced odour control technology has been confirmed by Crown Pet Foods at its new £17m production facility on the outskirts of Castle Cary, which opened in November last year. The move follows the company’s detailed assessment of the latest odour control technologies and a series of recent discussions with the Environment Agency and the Town Council.

“We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously,” says Francois Demauge, Managing Director of Crown Pet Foods. “And, having been based in Somerset for so many years, we’re very keen to maintain a reputation as a responsible and responsive local employer.

“We’ve now completed our assessment of the technologies currently available to food producers like ourselves, and can now proceed with a substantial investment in a highly sophisticated odour control system based on condenser and carbon filter technology. Moreover, we’re aiming to implement the new system in the shortest possible timeframe and looking for full implementation of the technology by the end of July. Given the technical complexity of odour control procedures, this installation programme represents a real challenge – but, we’re absolutely committed to being a responsible neighbour and to setting the highest possible standards in odour control.”

The company will host another meeting with the Environment Agency and Town Council liaison committee on the 17th April, to provide more details on the new investment plans. It has also confirmed that steps have already been taken to minimise odour emissions from existing production activities, which will continue to be limited to the least odorous foods until the new technology has been fully commissioned.

Formerly based in Yeovil, the specialist pet food producer is one of the largest employers in the area and has 86 members of staff at its new production facility in Castle Cary, with a further 81 employees in the national sales teams.
