Trial results are extremely encouraging as Crown Pet Foods takes delivery of advanced odour abatement technology

Major components of the advanced odour abatement system being introduced by Crown Pet Foods have started to arrive on site. Representing an investment of £1m, the additional equipment is being installed to minimise odour emissions from the company’s new facility on the outskirts of Castle Cary.

Delivery of new odour abatement equipmentWeighing more than three tonnes, three large stainless steel modules for the new condenser system arrived last week. This will be followed by the imminent delivery of no less than 18cu m of activated carbon for the two new filtration systems.

Once installed and commissioned, the new filter and condenser technology will supplement the company’s existing odour control system to provide what the company believes will be an unprecedented level of odour abatement within the food production industry. Trials of the advanced technology have been undertaken over the past month at the company’s larger sister operation in France, with extremely positive results.

Says Francois Demauge, Managing Director of Crown Pet Foods, “Although we have been using a system acknowledged as a Best Available Technology for food production, the scale of this additional investment shows just how seriously we take the concerns about odour emissions that have been raised by some members of the local community since we started production in November 2007. Intense and complex preparations have been taking place over the past six weeks to prepare for the delivery of the new equipment.”
