New odour abatement technology now on-line

Following a shut down of four days, Crown Pet Foods has confirmed its new odour abatement system is now operational and that production has now resumed at its facility on the outskirts of Castle Cary. Representing an investment of £1m, the new technology comprises a new stainless steel condenser, weighing more than three tonnes, and no less than 18 cubic metres of activated carbon for the two new filtration systems. Both additional systems are now operating in tandem with the cold plasma filter installed as part of the original production system at the end of last year.

“We gave an undertaking to the local community that we would do everything possible to minimise odour emissions from the facility,” says the company’s Communications Director, Alex Chadwick.

“To make such a huge additional investment and to source and commission such advanced technology so soon after we started production on site is a clear demonstration of our resolve and our determination to address concerns raised by some of our neighbours. We are very confident the new technology will have the desired effect following very encouraging pilot trials undertaken at our larger sister facility in France earlier in the summer.”

“As we develop our production activities over the next few months, we will continue to work very closely with the Environment Agency to ensure all practical precautions are taken to deliver sustained optimum performance of the new technology for the different product ranges.”

“We expect an immediate reduction in odour emissions although, inevitably, there will be some fluctuations in odour levels during this period of testing and assessment, as we fine-tune the various components of the three-tier odour abatement system that we now have in place. That said, from the outset, we are adopting stringent odour management and monitoring disciplines and rigorous system testing for the new technology to ensure its long-term effectiveness in minimising odour emissions. And, our ‘Helpline’ is available if anyone has any concerns – 0800 717800. Although there will be odd occasions when a slight odour may be detected, our goal is to minimise odours at all times and in all circumstances – that is exactly what this unprecedented level of odour abatement will enable us to deliver.”
